Short answer: For American readers write August 9, 2026 (month, day, year). For British and most other readers write 9 August 2026 (day, month, year). When you do not know who will read it, spell out the month or use the ISO 8601 format 2026-08-09 — neither can be misread.
US and UK date formats side by side
The differences come down to the order of month and day, and whether you use a comma. Here is Sunday, 9 August 2026 in both styles.
| Style | American (month–day–year) | British (day–month–year) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | August 9, 2026 | 9 August 2026 |
| With weekday | Sunday, August 9, 2026 | Sunday 9 August 2026 |
| Abbreviated | Aug. 9, 2026 | 9 Aug 2026 |
| Numeric | 08/09/2026 (= August 9) | 09/08/2026 (= August 9) |
| Spoken | August ninth, twenty twenty-six | the ninth of August, twenty twenty-six |
- Commas: American style puts a comma between the day and the year (August 9, 2026), and after the weekday if there is one. British style normally uses no commas.
- Abbreviations: American English usually adds a period (Aug.); British English usually does not (Aug).
- Weekdays: In both styles the weekday comes first.
Is 08/09 August 9 or September 8?
It depends entirely on who wrote it. In the United States, 08/09/2026 is August 9. In the UK, most of Europe, Australia, India and many other countries it is September 8. Both readings follow a valid national convention, so without context nobody but the writer can tell.

Months and their abbreviations
Month names are always capitalized. Use abbreviations in tables and headers where space is tight; in running text, write the month in full.
| Month | Abbreviation | Month | Abbreviation |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Jan. | July | Jul. |
| February | Feb. | August | Aug. |
| March | Mar. | September | Sep. / Sept. |
| April | Apr. | October | Oct. |
| May | May | November | Nov. |
| June | Jun. | December | Dec. |
Should you write "9th"?
We say "August ninth" or "the ninth of August", but in writing the plain number is the modern convention: August 9, 9 August. Ordinals such as 9th still appear on invitations and in very formal text, but most business writing leaves them out.
If you do use ordinals, the endings are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th–20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th–30th and 31st — with 11th, 12th and 13th as the exceptions.
Month and year only, and date ranges
- Month and year: August 2026 in both styles, with no comma.
- Ranges: August 9–15, 2026 (US) or 9–15 August 2026 (UK), using an en dash.
- Prepositions: on a specific day (on August 9), in a month or year (in August, in 2026), by a deadline (by August 9).
For file names and records, use yyyyMMdd
Written-out dates are for sentences people read. For file names, folder names and logs — anything you sort or search — a purely numeric year–month–day date such as yyyyMMdd (20260809) works best. It reads the same in every country, and sorting by name puts files in date order automatically. See What is the yyyyMMdd format? for details.
InsertDate is a Windows app that types today's date in yyyyMMdd when you press the Insert key — in Excel, Word, Outlook, chat apps and the File Explorer rename box alike.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use the American or British date format?
Match your reader. If you do not know who will read the document, or readers are in several countries, spell out the month (August 9, 2026) or use ISO 8601 (2026-08-09), which cannot be misread.
Where does the comma go in an American date?
Between the day and the year (August 9, 2026), and after the weekday if you include one (Sunday, August 9, 2026). British dates (9 August 2026) normally have no comma.
Is 08/09 August 9 or September 8?
In the United States it is August 9; in the UK and other day-first countries it is September 8. Numbers alone cannot tell you, so spell out the month or use ISO 8601 for international documents.
Do I need to write 9th instead of 9?
No. In writing, the plain number (August 9 or 9 August) is standard. Ordinals are used when speaking and in some very formal text.
