What is ddmmyyyy?
Day-month-year order and where it differs

ddmmyyyy writes a date as eight digits in day, month, year order, like 05032026. The same digits are read differently in different countries. This page shows how to avoid misreading and how to convert it in Excel.

Short answer: ddmmyyyy = 2-digit day + 2-digit month + 4-digit year, eight digits. March 5, 2026 is 05032026. But "05/03/2026" is read as 5 March in the UK and similar countries, and as May 3 in the US. To avoid misreading, start with the year: yyyymmdd (20260305).

There are three orders

OrderExample (March 5, 2026)Mainly used in (rough guide)
DD/MM/YYYY (day-month-year)05/03/2026UK, Australia, India, much of Europe and Latin America
MM/DD/YYYY (month-day-year)03/05/2026United States
YYYY/MM/DD (year-month-day)2026/03/05Japan, China, Korea and others. ISO 8601 uses this order too
ddmmyyyy05032026Day, month, year as 8 digits with no separators
yyyymmdd20260305Year, month, day as 8 digits with no separators

The format depends on the country, the company and the document. The table is only a guide.

Where misreading happens

"05/03/2026" is March 5 in day-month-year countries and May 3 in month-day-year countries. When the first number is above 12, as in "31/12/2026", the order is obvious, but dates with both numbers 12 or below are ambiguous. In international work, a misread date can mean a wrong deadline or contract date. See Is 08/09 August 9 or September 8? for more.

How to avoid misreading

  • Write the month in words: 5 Mar 2026 or March 5, 2026. With a month name, nothing is ambiguous (Writing dates in English).
  • Start with the year: 2026-03-05 (ISO 8601) or 20260305. Largest unit first leaves no room for misreading (What is ISO 8601?).
  • State the format: add a note such as "DD/MM/YYYY".

ddmmyyyy in Excel

  • Date to 8-digit text: =TEXT(A1,"ddmmyyyy")
  • 05032026 back to a date: =DATE(RIGHT(A1,4),MID(A1,3,2),LEFT(A1,2))
  • Caution: when you type a slash date such as 05/03/2026, Excel decides the order from your computer's regional settings. Data received from another country can come out with day and month swapped.

For file names and data exchange

yyyymmdd suits file names because sorting by name sorts by date. ddmmyyyy does not sort by date. For choosing a format, see yyyy/mm/dd vs yyyy-mm-dd vs yyyymmdd and Standardizing date formats across a team.

Type the format with one key

Typing day, month and year in your head's order invites mix-ups. InsertDate is a Windows app that types today's date in your chosen format when you press the Insert key. See the supported formats in the download section.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ddmmyyyy?

An 8-digit date with a 2-digit day, 2-digit month and 4-digit year and no separators. March 5, 2026 is 05032026.

What is the difference between ddmmyyyy and yyyymmdd?

The order is reversed. yyyymmdd starts with the year, so it sorts by date and is not misread across countries. ddmmyyyy starts with the day and does not sort well.

Is 05/03/2026 March 5 or May 3?

In day-month-year countries such as the UK it is March 5; in the US (month-day-year) it is May 3. Without context you cannot tell, so use a year-first format or write the month in words.

How do I convert ddmmyyyy to a date in Excel?

Use =DATE(RIGHT(A1,4),MID(A1,3,2),LEFT(A1,2)) to turn 05032026 into March 5, 2026.
